Privacy policy

What Keylark does with your information, in plain words.

Last updated 13 October 2026

Who we are

Marc Scully, of 13 St Fiacres Place, Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny, R95 CR2F, makes Keylark. We are the controller of the personal information described here, which means we decide how and why it is used. To ask us anything about it, write to support@keylark.app.

The short version

  • Nothing you play or hear leaves your computer.
  • Keylark keeps the names and times of the chords it learned, in your browser. You can forget any song, or all of them, in Your songs.
  • There is no account, no advertising and no tracking on this website or in Keylark.
  • Checking a licence sends Polar your key and a random name for your computer. Polar, which sells Keylark, handles your payment details. We never see your card number.
  • We hear from you only when you write to us, or sign up for news.

What stays on your computer

Almost everything Keylark does happens in your browser, on your computer. Because it stays there, we do not receive it, cannot see it and cannot give it to anyone.

What Keylark hears

The sound of a browser tab you choose, while it plays: on the web page through Chrome’s own sharing, in the side panel through the tab you clicked Keylark’s button on. Or a song file you open. Keylark hears only what is playing at that moment. It never downloads a video or its sound, never reads ahead and never records.

What it keeps

For each song it learns: the names and times of the chords, where the beats fall, the song’s key, and the file’s name or the video’s title. These are kept in your browser (in its IndexedDB storage) so that the next play knows the song. They are listed in Your songs, where you can forget any song or all of them. Your settings, such as where the hands split and which sound you chose, are kept the same way. Nothing of the sound itself is kept.

The extension

On YouTube pages only, the extension reads the video’s address and title and where it is playing: its position, its speed, whether it is playing and whether YouTube is showing an advert. It passes these to Keylark’s side panel, or to a Keylark page you have open, on your computer, and to nothing else. It keeps each tab’s last reading in memory only.

Your keyboard

Keylark asks Chrome for access to MIDI keyboards, and never for permission to change their settings. It reads only the keys you press, to play them. If you choose a MIDI out port, it sends the notes it plays to that port, for another program on your computer to sound, and nothing else.

Licence checks

When you paste in your licence key, and now and then afterwards, Keylark checks it with Polar, which issues the keys. The check sends Polar:

  • your licence key;
  • a random name Keylark makes up for your computer, which is not your name and is not linked to you; and
  • your IP address, which any website or service you connect to receives.

We do this to see that your key is real and is used on no more than 3 computers, so that we can do what we promised when you bought Keylark (our contract with you is the lawful basis). It sends nothing about what you play or hear.

Buying Keylark

Polar sells Keylark to you as its merchant of record. Polar takes your payment and details such as your name, email address and billing country, sends your receipt and key, and handles the VAT. For all of that, Polar is an independent controller, with its own responsibilities to you. Read Polar’s privacy policy.

Polar tells us what we need to look after you and keep our accounts, such as your email address, what you bought and what you paid. We never see your card number. We use this to give you what you bought, to answer you, and to meet our legal duties, such as keeping accounts for tax.

Support and feedback

When you write to us, or send a message through the feedback page or the page shown when you remove the extension, we keep what you send and our replies. We use them to answer you and to make Keylark better. The lawful basis is our legitimate interest in helping our users and running Keylark well. We keep emails for 2 years from the last message, then delete them.

The forms on this site pass your message to the service that delivers it to us, which acts for us and may not use it for anything else. If the feedback form has not been set up, it opens your own email program instead, and your email is then simply an email to us. Please don’t put in anything you would not want us to read. If you want a reply, include your email address in the message.

The newsletter

If you sign up for news, we use your email address to send it, and for nothing else. The lawful basis is your consent, and you can take it back any time: every email has a link to unsubscribe. We keep your address until you unsubscribe. The email service we use sends the emails for us and keeps the list; it is our processor.

This website

This website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies: no analytics scripts, no advertising, no fonts or videos from elsewhere. If we count visits, it is without cookies and without following you from page to page. Our host, Cloudflare, receives your IP address and the pages you ask for, as any host does, and gives us only counts.

Transfers abroad

Some of the services we use, including Polar and Cloudflare, are based in the United States or use computers there. Where your information goes there, it is sent under the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses, or to a company certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, which protect it to a similar standard.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you can ask us to:

  • tell you what information of yours we hold, and give you a copy;
  • correct it, or delete it;
  • limit how we use it, or stop using it for our legitimate interests;
  • give you what you gave us in a form you can move elsewhere; and
  • stop sending you news, by unsubscribing, or by telling us.

Write to support@keylark.app. We will answer within one month. For what Polar holds as an independent controller, write to Polar.

If you are unhappy

Please tell us first, and we will try to put it right. You can also complain to the Data Protection Commission, Ireland’s data protection regulator, at dataprotection.ie, or to the regulator where you live: in the United Kingdom, the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.

Children

Keylark is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we use your information, we will change this page and its date, and tell you by email if the change matters and we have your address.
