Keylark Try it in your browser

For singers who don’t play piano

Play along to any song tonight, without learning it.

Plug in a keyboard, start a song and press keys in time. You keep the rhythm; Keylark picks the notes, every one of them from the chords it hears in the song.

Free to start. Works in Chrome or Edge on a computer. No keyboard? Your computer’s keys A to K play too.

A drawing, not a screenshot: you press the keys, Keylark picks the notes.

A 45-second look at Keylark

How it works

Three things to do, and none of them is learning the song.

  1. Start a song

Play it in a Chrome tab, such as on YouTube, open a song file such as an MP3, or try the built-in demo song.

  2. Plug in a keyboard

Any MIDI keyboard will do. Without one, your computer’s keys A to K play.

  3. Press keys in time

You decide when a note sounds. Keylark decides which note, from the chords it hears: the left hand plays the bass and the right hand the chords.

Press harder and it is louder. Hold a key and the note is held. The rhythm is yours; Keylark only chooses the notes.

Play it twice, and it gets better

Keylark learns a song as it plays, so the second time through it already knows where it is going.

The first time through

It plays along by ear

Keylark listens as the song plays and picks your notes from the chords it hears. It is learning the song while you play.

It is least sure just after a chord changes. That is the weak spot of listening by ear, and it is why the second play exists.

Played again

It knows every change before it comes

Keylark kept the song’s chords and when they change, so it is ready for each one. Both hands get the full chords, with richer ones where it is sure of them.

A song file or the demo song is learned before it plays, so it starts that way.

Made for singers who don’t play the piano

Keep the rhythm with your hands and sing over it. Keylark is for anyone who needs to join in without time to learn the song.

You sing, and want to accompany yourself

Play along at home to the songs you sing, with chords under your fingers.

You sing at open mics, functions or weddings

Open your own backing track and add live keys to it, without learning each song first.

You teach or learn singing

Hear a song’s chords under your hands while you work on the voice.

You were asked to join in tonight

Start the song, put your hands on the keys and play along.

Keylark doesn’t teach piano. If you want lessons, a piano course is the better place to start.

On the keys

Two hands, two jobs

The left hand plays the bass and the right hand plays the chords.

Chords or Solo

Chords is for singing over. Solo is for a tune of your own.

Two sounds

A grand piano and an electric piano.

MIDI out

Send the notes to another program on your computer, and play its sounds instead.

What you play stays on your computer

Nothing you play or hear leaves your computer. Keylark keeps only the names and times of the chords it learned, in your browser, and you can forget any song in Your songs. There is no account and no advertising. Checking your licence sends Polar your key and a random name for your computer, and nothing else.

Three questions people ask first

Do I need a MIDI keyboard?

No. Your computer’s keys A to K play too. A MIDI keyboard gives you more keys, and a harder press sounds louder.

Can I use it at a gig?

Yes, with your own backing track: open the song file and play along. YouTube’s own terms are for personal, non-commercial listening, so use a YouTube song for practice and a backing track for an audience.

What if a note sounds wrong?

The first time through, Keylark is working out the chords by ear, and it is weakest just after a change. Play the song again and it knows every change before it comes.

Before you start

Chrome or Edge, on a computer

It does not work in Safari or Firefox, or on an iPad or a phone.

Wired headphones, or the laptop’s speakers

Bluetooth adds a delay, so your keys sound late. Keylark warns you when it hears one.

A keyboard, or just your keys

Plug in a MIDI keyboard, or play on your computer’s keys A to K.
